The Running Tool is used for running and setting various locking sleeves. This design prevents accidental setting even if the tool encounters a hang-up during the lowering process. The running tool and the locking mechanism will not separate until the locking sleeve’s locking fingers are fully extended into the landing profile. If separation between the running tool and the locking mechanism occurs, the running tool will not release the locking mechanism, allowing both to be retrieved from the well when pulling out the running tool.

The running tool is typically designed for use with a D Probe. During the lowering process, the running tool’s locking fingers firmly grip the retrieval neck (expander sleeve) inside the locking mechanism. If the retrieval neck cannot move sufficiently to fully extend the locking fingers, the running tool’s fingers will not retract and will not release the locking mechanism. If the running tool and the locking mechanism are retrieved together, it indicates a failed running operation. Once the locking mechanism is set in the landing profile, the running tool’s fingers retract and release the retrieval neck. After shearing the pins inside the D Probe and setting the locking mechanism in the landing profile, the running tool is brought back to the surface.
